South African Art Is HOT Property For Overseas Buyers!

It doesn’t have to be a Pierneef or Irma Stern for overseas buyers to get there cheque books out.

In the past 10 years there has been an enormous resurgence of new exciting South African artists to hit the UK and US markets. Paul Emsley, Peter Van Straten, Johan Angus, LJ Van Vuuren, Walter Meyer, Andrew Cooper (to name but a few!) are widely represented in private collections both here and abroad.

Investors are looking closely at the SA Art Market and the new kids on the block are back in fashion. It’s like being in the UK 10 years ago when the Royal Academy put on the ‘Sensations’ show in London. Natasha Norman who up until 2 years ago was still finishing off her degree at the University of Cape Town has suddenly hit the lime light with her extraordinary works depicting the role of advertising in modern society with references to renaissance art! Her new work looks at the effects of violence in our culture…Natasha is just one of many exciting new talents emerging on the SA art scene.

In a recent sale of South African art at Bonhams in London (May 2007), Giles Peppiatt the director, was quoted as saying that “ South African art has come of age on the international scene” The sale raised 20 Million ZAR!

The move away from apartheid dominated themes is perhaps one reason why collectors are now looking at SA art. They are now recognising SA artists for their truly ground breaking and original work. South African art has come of age!
