Dragons have long been important mythological figures in Asian and Western Cultures. In Asian cultures they were viewed as highly respected creatures, with connection to the emperors and imperial families. In Japan, dragons were seen as the protectors of the imperial family, and it is also believed the first emperor descended from a dragon.

Many people are attracted to the design of these majestic creatures, yet few truly know what they symbolize. Tattoos of Asian dragons commonly represent guardianship, wisdom, freedom, and empowerment.

Whereas Asian cultures associated dragons with positive attributes, Western cultures traditionally viewed dragons as pure evil. Western and Asian dragons also differ in appearance.
